All About Your Roofline

The roofline is the area of your home or business premises where the walls meet the roof. It’s often white wooden boards and uPVC guttering, but colour and material varies between buildings. The image below identifies the key components of a roofline:

labelled roofline components including soffits, fascias, barge boards, guttering, downpipes and box end.

Roofline Components

Guttering: collects rain water as it drains from the roof tiles.

Downpipe: waste water flows from the gutters towards ground level.

Fascia board: faces away from the building. Guttering attaches to fascia.

Barge board: like fascia, but fitted to gable end under sloped roof.

Soffits: fit to fascias and barge boards to fill gap to wall.

Box end: tidies up the ends of the fascias, soffits and barge boards to give a great finish.

All of these elements combine to provide a host of benefits to buildings.

The most obvious is that they support the drainage of rain water in leaving the roof without soaking walls and surfaces below.

In addition they help to weather proof the building. Wet and windy days could cause damp in the loft space without proper protection, so soffits, fascias and barge boards come together to create a protective shield to minimise the chance of water ingress.

At the same time, many installations include ventilation measures to allow air flow in and out of the attic of the building.
